Meandering through Annapolis springs delight: Reynolds Tavern

Reynolds Tavern first caught my eye in my Facebook newsfeed. I think it came to my attention because of the comment about how beautiful Fall was. It would be another couple of years before I made it there. I had always wondered what a tea room was, and I was delighted to watch others sip their way through the afternoon.

Having hoofed it from the Gott's Court Garage down to St. Anne's Church, I finally stumbled across Reynolds Tavern the organic way. I decided to do my bi-annual pilgrimage to Irish Traditions for a wool sweater, and to get a watermelon lemonade on the way home. A usual tea drinker, I was surprised I didn't indulge, but it was just too hot.

It was an odd time to be eating -- 4pm is not exactly a meal hour, but I was just in time for Afternoon Tea. I watched several other tables enjoy theirs with various little sandwiches or snacks. I myself ordered the Quiche Lorraine, which comes with a house salad. I will say, the quiche was pretty solid and warm. The salad was good and the dressing was perfect yet light.

I wasn't sure about reservations at the Tavern. It seems you can make them, but they squeezed me in today without too much trouble. I sat near the old fireplace with pineapple decorations on top and felt more than welcome. Seeing the menu was simple enough, all I had to do was scan the code on my phone and I could check out the wide variety of choices.

A fan of the Chesapeake Bay and Smith Island, I had to order the Maryland State dessert: Smith Island Cake. (This has been a project of mine--comparing Smith Island cakes from various restaurants to see which tastes most like the original...) Full from my late lunch, I got it to go. As I sat there, taking in the pictures of Thomas Point Lighthouse and the various boats, listening to jazz music from the 1930s, I heard a fella from the table next to me say, "This was a wonderful introduction." And indeed it was. He continued, "Shall we wander?" And so I did.

Outside of the Tavern a street vender is selling flowers. I somehow was wondering if they use Square and had memories of Pike Place Market in Seattle. It made me smile. The selection was beautiful and the Seller smiled at me. I was happy then, but with my hands full of Irish wares and Smith Island Cake, I chose to meander back to Gott's Court. And I knew then, that I would back...

Next time with a good book, more free time, and plans to entertain Afternoon Tea.
